The Reef
*World
of the Seaquines*
|

Basics
The
reef is comprised of a giant ring formed by a massive volcano. Currently only the west half of the ring has been explored, the east
side being unknown territory. In recent years the basic shape of the
eastern reef was mapped with the help of seabirds and dreamers. The known
half of the reef is often referred to as The Moon.

The Deep |
The Moon is
divided into six provinces. There are only a few small true islands.
There is also the "outside" which is the open ocean surrounding the
reef and the Abyss in the center of the reef formed by the heart of
the volcano. The reef is also divided into levels, the shallows of
the Upper reef (most populated, upper
class), the deeper Lower
reef (more rural), the Halflight (wild), and the darkness of the Deep (unknown). |

The Provinces
Pinnacle: Home to
the capital. Pinnacle is the height of civilization on the
reef. Home to the government, the Spectrum Guild and the Academy
Seaward: Facing
the open ocean, Seaward is the place where trouble most often hits the
reef. It is the home of the first lionfish and has the greatest
number of warriors.
Bounty: This is
the bread basket of the reef, providing much of the food and also claims
the plume fields.
Tidelands: Home to
the shallowest waters on the reef with many tidepools. Also the
location of the Southern Moon Nursery.
Azuria: Home of
the first kelpies and also of the great kelp forests.
Moon's End:
Considered to be the most backwater of all the provinces. Holds to
the old traditions.

Inhabitants
The
Seaquine: sentient, complex social structure
The
Octopi: merchants, sentient,
skilled craftsmen
Seahorses
(little cousins)
The
Seaquine: Seaquines
have a highly developed, complex society. There are many rituals observed
such as a rite of passage into adulthood, the bonding of mates, and the naming
of elders. They are devoted parents, both male and female. Access to the
nurseries is extremely limited, therefore the laws about who can use them and
how they are used are very strict.
The Song: How do you build a complex civilization
without the benefit of hands? By song. The Seaquines have the
abilities to control other creatures with song. This ability comes in a
wide range of skill levels. The song itself is not made of words but
rather a type of humming. This amazing rumble can be quite complex. Some creatures, like the jellies are extremely
susceptible to song while others like the octopi and seahorses are immune.
Skilled singers can shape coral, train creatures, and send away sharks.
Creatures are used to do many basic tasks, octi do small household chores
like fastening clasps, clawbsters can dig and crush and are a source of income
to those who own them.
